01 September 2015 - I'll go where you want me to go.

Well folks my time in McComb is now running on empty! I love this place but I'm excited for a new adventure. Sister Lanning is training and I am so excited for her to take off and blossom even more. She is a way powerful missionary! McComb will be left in some very capable hands. I asked president about Mr. Joe's and Ms. Renee's baptisms, he said that I could skype in for them since I had found them and taught all the lessons. That made my broken heart sing! Y'all should have seen Mr. Joe when I told him I might be leaving. He just said "Wait, before my baptism!?" So skype is such a blessing. Anyways, the president had a surprise for me too... I am becoming a Sister Training Leader. Whoa ok I'll do my best. Little overwhelming but I am excited for a new challenge.
As for funnies... we were helping our investigator organize her boys bedrooms, the same woman we helped with her kitchen a couple weeks ago. We were chugging right along, I was piling clothes, Sister Lanning sweeping and Stephanie was cleaning out the closet. All of a sudden a mouse runs across the room and Sister Lanning and I jump. Held our screams back because we didnt want to sound like babies! Then we went back to work and Steph found a mouse nest with four babies.... she killed them with a book. At this point Sister Lanning are praising her because we would have never been able to do that. So we all go back to work and then we find the mama mouse that had taken off earlier, Stephanie killed it with a slipper... at this point Sister Lanning could only say "Only in Mississippi are the woman tough enough to take on the job of rat killing!" But then it happened, one more mouse ran out while I was down on the ground holding the dust pan. It ran over Sister Lanning's feet and right at me. We lost it, our calm and collected selves that acted like it was no biggie started to scream. We were so afraid and shook up and there Stephanie is, sitting on the floor laughing at us and says 'It's just a mouse." Good times. Another crazy story is we were talking to this 60 year old man on his door step and he tried to feed me a grape, not just offer me a grape but literally held it to my mouth! I had to duck and tell him I wasn't very hungry... Mississippi is crazy. Then we were having a lesson with some investigators and during the entire lesson their friend (without any teeth i might add) was asking me for my phone number. I just ignored him to the end and then told him I couldn't give it out. He then asked if he could give me his number so I could call him so we could chat. I also declined that offer too. Then he looks up one last time to ask if he can take me to dinner. I told him that that wasn't going to work out because I'm a missionary. Sister Lanning is never a help she just watches and laughs... Once again the people are crazy! Gotta love them though.
Sister Smith was my Sister Training Leader for this transfer that just ended and so we got to go on exchanges together. It was so fun and things felt so normal but weird because everything was different (house, car, town) but everything was the same. We had a ton of fun :)
We were tracting last week and talked to a lady who said we could come back. We went back and it happened to be the grandma to all of those kids I named several weeks ago! LaTarenesha, Sherieka, Mikayla, Jerimiah, Maleah, and Lester Collins Jr. God works in mysterious ways. Their grandma said she met with missionaries then moved and lost contact, but she had even gone to church with them. They are wonderful and so sweet. Lester Collins Jr. is like 5, when I asked what I should call him he told me his whole name. It was way funny. So Lester Collins Jr. it is.
We had a really good lesson with Mr. Joe and he told us that had missionaries knocked on his door any other time he would have turned them away but something told him not to. He reminds me of Howard. He is truly prepared. He stayed for the Linger Longer after church and made a veggie casserole and a 3 layer pie. He really enjoyed himself and I finally got a picture with him with a real smile.
Life is so good. I have grown so much here in McComb. I can feel myself becoming the person God has intended me to be. Missions are amazing, for the people you bless and for yourself. It's really because of those people you bless that you change, they are the bigger blessing! Here I go into the unknown. Ill let yall know where im at next week.

Love yall to the moon and back. Sister Kerr

24 August 2015 - Amos and Aliens

Oh man some cool stuff happened this week! I have discovered my new favorite food.... Boiled peanuts... hahaha i sound like an old lady but they are divine! Yall should try them they turn into the texture of a bean and are way good. We finally found the lizards that scurried in and we werent able to catch them all. We found one and on our way taking it outside I stepped on the other one! Gross, but it didnt die. If it had i probably might have thrown up. It sounds like the family has been up to adventures like I have! We went tracting in the rain because it was way cooler! Crocs...... words cant describe how grateful i am. We were able to get 4 new investigators this week though, Mel, Nicole, Billy and Vernetta. People can be so sweet or they can be so rude! We had several people open their door to us and tell us they dont have time to "mess" with us. Ouch. Alrighty, well you have a blessed day too!
Rudeness couldnt slow us down this week because Mr. Joe has gone 6 days with out smoking!!! Yes ma'am... 6 whole days. He is the greatest and the biggest ray of sunshine. He is so shy and quiet but he came to all of church and in gospel principles we were talking about talents. We asked him what one of his talents was and he said being quiet hahah we laughed and then told him how great he is! He has told us that he is a great cook and said he might bring something to share to the linger longer next week!
We were able to meet with Mr. Billy, Ms. Renee's husband. He is a stubborn man but I think that's why we love him so much. I know that the Book of Mormon will soften his heart but he just keeps telling us he isn't a good reader. So I told him we would be back to read it aloud to him because it is that important. He said he would listen! He is such a great person.
While we were tracting we came upon a lady who answered the door and said "Oh no, I know about yall, I was just reading about yall on the internet. Yall believe Jesus is an alien that we sent to earth!" I told her "No that isn't what we believe but we have this really awesome pamphlet that talks about what we believe." So she took one and as she was scanning through it she told us is a religious christian. We told her that was great and then she stopped on a page in the pamphlet as she was thumbing through and said pointing at page that had a quoted scripture from Amos, "Amos? Where did this scripture come from?" Then she ranted about how she has never even heard about Amos. So then I asked if she was familiar with the Old Testament she said kind of was. I then explained that Amos is in the Old Testament.... She kind of just stood there, then she said give me a week to read this and yall can come back. It was so funny!!
Its been a really good transfer, I cant believe its done! Dont expect to hear from me next Monday, its proselyting Monday. I love McComb, Mississippi! I never want to leave... except for maybe when my mission is done :) I that when we put our truast in God things go significantly better! So challenge for yall...(Easier said than done)... Put your trust in your God.
Dont forget to read the Book of Mormon either, it knows exactly what to say! It publishes glad tidings of great joy!

17 August 2015 - The Work of God.

Whoa we had a fantastic week! First off Brianna and Dottie  got baptized! It was such a special day, they were so excited, happy and overwhelmed by the spirit. We were able to plan a beautiful baptismal service and Elder Ross performed the baptisms. We went and saw Bri on Friday to make sure we had the right size baptismal suit and we prayed with her. She offered it and my favorite part was "Lord, please come into my heart before I get dipped and after." She is so so set on becoming closer to Christ and I know that the steps she just took will help her so much. After her confirmation she just told us how much peace and comfort she felt. She loves the Holy Ghost! Dottie cried when she watched her daughter, Bri get baptized and had to cry in my arms before she was ready to be baptized herself. It was such a joyful moment to see people willing to make covenants with God. We made them baptism memory books, little 4x6 photo books. We passed out index cards and had every member write down their testimony, then we put them into the photo album so when they struggle or get knocked down or doubt they can stand on the Faith of others until they find theirs again. Sister Hansen gave us the idea and they loved it! During sacrament meeting I took on the job of hushing Emari while the sacrament was passed, she is 4, the one who wore my name tag :) I leaned over and told her that they were going to bring us bread so we could remember Jesus. Her eyes got huge as she asked me "Is Jesus coming here right now?!" It was so cute, little kids know more than you think, she really loves Jesus and it's adorable. She was coloring throughout sacrament meeting and one of the speakers mentioned the Book of Mormon in their talk and her head popped up and she asked "They read the Book of Mormon here too?" Emari will one day make a phenominal missionary. Dottie was telling us that Emari had her 3 year old cousin over and what they ended up playing was missionary. Emari got all the pamphlets out of Dottie's pile and then sat across Hailee, the cousin, and asked what she saw in the pictures and then when they got to the end and they saw the picture of the lady praying, Emari taught Hailee how to pray. I guess that goes to show kids absorb everything! So I challenge you Sky and Whit to fill your kiddos heads with good because they are so capable of learning the gospel now. That reminds me, Whitney sent me a letter about her kids playing missionary too. They were all dressed up with boots and backpacks and when Whitney asked where/ what they were playing they said "We are missionaries in Bermany!"
We had a couple of experiences this week including the gift of tongues.... We first met Lloyd in the mall when we were picking up some supplies for the baptism at Dollar Tree he stopped us and talked to us for a while. He was an old man who had lost his wife. He would talk and then we would relate a gospel principle. Just about everytime we would finish talking about a gospel principle he would just about gag on his words and then appoligize because he almost "slipped". We were so confused, then he saw that we were confused so he told us he was just so full of the spirit talking to us that he was struggling to hold back his words. So not sure exactly what he meant by that I just told him to go ahead and talk. The secod I said that the flood gate to gibberish dropped. As he mumbled unknown words I just turned to Sister Lanning thinking what is happening. The only word I recognized was Lord. So that was interesting. Then later that day we ended up seeing him 2 other times. He came up to us when we were talking to someone about the restoration and stopped us to tell the person we had just met and were teaching that we were Angel girls... Sister Lanning quoted "O that I were and angel..." from Alma 29:1 and I just giggled my head off because that is my favorite chapter of scripture as of a couple of weeks ago. We had to laugh it off because it really was so interestingly weird. Never thought that would happen in my life. Then later that evening we tracted into a lady named Connie and she was super against the idea of the Book of Mormon but as we taught the Restoration she softened up and agreed to take one and read it. Its amazing how the spirit can soften hearts, but anyway I was saying the closing prayer and she spoke in tongues throughout the whole prayer I was so distracted! I wasn't expecting it at all so as she mumbled I just prayed along. The only word recognized that time was Jesus. Im super confused because the Bible talks about the Apostles receiving the gift of tongues, defined as all the Apostles came from different countries and spoke different languages but when they were together they were able to understand and communicate with each other through the gift of tongues. The gift of tongues is a spiritual gift to be used to help people understand each other, and that is not what happened with the two people we met. If anything the lack of understanding nearly overpowered the entire conversations! We had a lesson with Mr. Joe and we read in 2 Nephi how they were blessed witht he tongue of Angels and he was confused. Sister Lanning explained beautifully that it is a gift from the spirit that guides our words to help others understand our testmonies and teachings better. Then he understood :) Speaking of Mr. Joe he came to church for all 3 hours and accepted a baptismal date! So excited for him. He has changed so much. He told us in our last lesson that his mom told him when he was over there to take care of her that he is changing, he is a lot less irritable and grumpy, that he is becoming a nicer and more patient person. It was the prime opportunity to be able to bear testimony that we knew it was the Book of Mormon changing him!
Well we welcomed 2 more lizards to the house! They just sneak in whenever we opn the door, whatever if the keep spiders out, come on in! Its been a great week and I know that God is in charge. That is one of the hardest things to learn. Plus I am a super planned person so when something falls through or doesn't work I get flustered because we worked so hard to det up those plans! But Sister Lanning pointed out to me yesterday that we have to embrace very moment to be a missionary, and because we did that we were bale to meet several people we wouldn't have. I swear she is training me. I know that this is where I am needed and I am grateful for the time I am able to spend here. These are my people. I love yall and thanks for the emails ma and pa you are the best :) Allow the work of God to change you, like it has me. I can honestly say I have grown more in this past week than I have in the entire 5 months!
God bless yall

10 August 2015 - Tragedy strikes McComb.

Heart wrenching things take place all over the world. I wouldn't say I grew up sheltered but I definitely grew up protected. Things happen here in Mississippi that I literally never ever imagined I would experience on a mission. There was a little 10 year old boy, who was shot and killed by his 22 year old cousin high on drugs this week. Our investigators cousins house burned tot he ground she lost everything in that fire including her husband. Ms. Shirley at the nursing home had a heart attack days after her 78th birthday. Ms. Sheila was placed in a nursing home at the age of 42. A tree fell at Joe's moms house. Ms. Dottie's mom is in the hospital. The list seriously goes on and on. The poverty here is sometimes unbearable. The illiteracy is rampant. And apparently the tolls placed on human lives are heavy. I have really come to realize that no matter who you are bad things happen. Sometimes my heart can't handle the messes here in Mississippi and I just want to get away because there is literally nothing that a 19 year old girl can do for people who are so stuck in ruts that it is normal to live the way they do. But then I remember that this is a whole lot bigger than a 19 year old girl, this is a whole lot bigger than the murders, sickness and disasters. This is way bigger than the state of Mississippi. When we zoom all the way out.. I mean ALL the way out, we see galaxies after galaxies. How are we even ever seen or noticed by our God? Do the horrific things happening to the people of McComb matter? Yes ma'am they do. God sees us and hears us and loves us. No matter how small we feel or how buried we feel or how burned we feel or how scared we feel He knows. I think the greatest thing people could ever realize is there is a God and He loves each one of His children more than we can imagine. We are nothing without Him, and to Him we are His everything. Out of all the names of deity, God asks us to call Him Father. This is very significant. He is literally our parent and as we understand that we see that He is so concerned about all that goes on! If bad things didnt happen to good people, people would never learn. So as we need to recognize our Saviors role in all of this. Only He can relieve our sorrow, only He can be that beacon of light. So basically even though sad things happen there is good going on all around. Everyone experiences things so differently and because God knows that we have prayer and scriptures! The Gospel of Jesus Christ truly blesses families. We can take the Gospel and apply it to each one of those tragedies and then we gain an understanding a sense of peace and a true love for our Redeemer! I just want to bear my testimony that God is everywhere! He is with me everywhere I go! Someone told us yesterday that we were glowing :) I know that in a darkness that is when light or truth can be seen the most! This mission is so different than I thought it would be! But I love it and it's changing me.
On a significantly brighter note, Dottie and Bri are still on to be Baptized on Saturday! They are such amazing people and are so ready. They have taught me a lot and I now really understand what it means when people say that people don't get truly converted by you, it's by the spirit. I really am unsure of what we 2 new missionaries taught well and explained clearly but apparently the spirit translated. Fear is the opposite of Faith so as we go about doing good knowing God will speed we can touch the hearts of many souls who are wondering in darkness because of tragedy.
I love yall so much! I hope your week was filled with as much learning and understanding as mine! I wish I had more time to study the scriptures. I have forgotten what it feels like to not have a schedule, or to just sit down on the couch and read a book. So family do it for me. Thanks for all the wonderful updates. Oh and Pepper went to fiddler camp???? Was it at the fiddlers hall of fame? lol that is seriously the coolest thing eva!
Stay golden family, because we are forever!

03 August 2015 - The Start of Week 3.

Its been a good week! I am so glad Kensey and Addey are having so much fun on their road trip! Everyone sounds so happy! My week was good too! Laugh for the week..... I literally dropped my scripture case in a puddle of baby puke then picked it up and put ti on my lap without knowing. Then I looked down during the lesson and my skirt and scripture case were dripping. YUCK! Oh and we also welcomed a new roommate, her name is Yolanda and she is a lizard. We came in the other night and she was just hanging out. So we grabbed a couple of pictures and then she scurried into the wall..... Great. Whatever she can stay, she is a lot more welcome than Earl Wolfgang (Gigantic Wolf spider.)  Yolanda is like tiny, maybe 2 inches :)
We were able to teach Mr. Joe about the word of wisdom and he has decided to quit smoking! Yay! He has been smoking for 45 years so bad habit doesn't quite cover it, its more like a way of life! But he is willing to change which is just beyond amazing, we know that its the gospel because nothing else could cause anyone to believe there is hope after doing it for so long. And he came to church! He showed up and sat with one of our members that has been coming to the lessons with us. He said he really enjoyed it and that he would stay for the full 3 hours next week. We also had Ms. Dottie come to church, she also bore her testimony. It was so simple and beautiful. She stood before everyone and just said that she doesnt know what she is supposed to say, but she knows the Book of Mormon is true and that God has sent her the missionaries so she could become better and change into the person God has in mind of her becoming. It was truly amazing. She is so ready to be baptized on the 15th of August. Same with Bri, at their house we had a lesson and talked about the last of the commandments with them. One of their cousins, Courtney sat in like she always does. She is very reserved and doesn't like the idea of leaving the church she grew up in. We asked Bri if she was sure she wanted to be baptized because it was a big commitment and she said "Yes!" Then Courtney asked her if she was just going to belong to 2 churches now, her church she grew up in and this new church. Bri answered saying "No, I will only have one church, this one. I have been praying the past while that God would make a way that I could get closer to Him. I know that I will get closer to God in this church more than I was in my last church. I am so excited to get baptized and keep getting closer to God!" I was so happy at that moment. I bore my testimony on how each and every person is prepared by God throughout their lives. I know that everything Bri has experienced has brought her to this moment where she would truly be prepared to receive an answer to her prayer. She can really grow that relationship with God now that she is ready. I love this marvelous plan God has and His patience in working with imperfect people such as I to carry out a work much bigger than my beautiful companion and I. Its been a super great time in Mccomb... I don't want it to end! I sure do love Mississippi!

27 July 2015 - "The white girls are here!"

We are so the minority around here. We were following up with a girl named Ayana, we were bringing her a Book of Mormon and when we knocked we literally heard the 6 year old named Jamie yell after she peeked through the blinds, "The white girls are here!" I just laughed and laughed. Another laugh for y'all is we bought some new dish soap but for some reason when we rinse our dishes it doesn't rinse off! There is a slight residue left on them. It was on our water bottles and tasted awful! But I like said last week not drinking water ISNT an option! So we drank and drank and drank. I finally got the  flavor out of mine by buying a lemonade at wendy's and putting it in there. But I'm not kidding when I say it tasted exactly how cabbage patch doll face smells.... it was way weird. New motto for the week "Palmolive, gentle on the hands tough on the inards." It actually made Sister Lanning sick... she puked one night hahahaha. Probably shouldn't laugh but she is better now.
Dottie, Bri and now Courtney are all doing great! Bri and Dottie have a baptismal date set for the 15th of August. I am truly so excited for them. They came to the third hour of church yesterday they were aiming for sacrament but their morning went nuts! But they made it to some and had a great time. They also made it to Pioneer day! It was so fun we had all sorts of fun games and activities. Tasha also came to the activity :) The kids had so much fun.
Ms.Renee came to church! She said whoa that wasn't anything too crazy! I think someone might have told her something and so she was expecting church to be all wacky. Sister Lanning and I sang "Abide with me tis eventide" in sacrament meeting and it actually went very well. I was pretty dang nervous because I really don't have to much musical talent going for me. Ms.Renee said she loved it. She is doing wonderful and continues to grow every time we see her.
It has been a really good week. I really love McComb and I can't believe it has been nearly 5 months that I have been living here. Mississippi truly has my heart.
It really is such a privilege to be able to teach these people more about their Savior and God. And how we can serve them through caring for others and keeping the commandments. I use to get nervous when we had to teach people about the word of wisdom because I always thought it would turn people away but I see that as people learn if they are truly prepared they will use it to turn towards God more! I know that all the commandments are so inspired and it makes so much sense. I am grateful for the love that I feel from my God as well as my family. Keep up the good work family :) Love you FOREVER

20 July 2015 - We be staying in McComb!

Well hello folks, just a brief announcement my English is gone but I be staying in McComb!! I seriously have a hard time speaking like the average person. But its ok I some how seem to manage. We are both staying here in McComb, MS which is thrilling, that means i will serve in McComb for a third of my mission. Sister Lanning and I decided that hydration is key down here, but sadly its the key to the bathroom! I have literally never sweat so much in my life. Dad knows how hot it was this past week (love that I can say that! I thought of you everyday that you were in New Orleans and I just loved drawing strength from knowing we were so close!) Anyways Im not sure I have ever seen droplets of sweat on my calves but it happened. We meet some people witht he most random names! For example: Da'Money, RoDerrick, TyDerricka, LaTaranesha, Sherika, Toya. Whenever we meet someone we have to pull out our planner and ask how they spell it haha.
We had a lesson with Ms. Renee this week and we get there and we start off by asking how her class went, she taught a class on the disease she has to people who have just been diagnosed with the same disease. She said it went really well. She said she took her Bible, her Book of Mormon and her Restoration and Plan of Salvation pamphlets with her. She said that she was able to teach them all about that God is our loving Heavenly Father and that he isn't cursing any of them with their disease. She then taught them about the Plan of Salvation and how this life on earth is a time for us to prepare, learn and grow. She explained to a crying teenager in the back of the room who was afraid of the newly found disease that this isn't the end, we experience hard things to make us better but when the time is right we will all be resurrected as promised in the Book of Mormon and Bible. She said she was able to hush the girls fears by telling her that a relationship with God will make all the difference. As I heard her re tell this experience that she had at the hospital tears rolled down my cheeks as I thought of the statement made in Preach my Gospel, those who truly being changed by the gospel have a desire to share it with those around them. She is being a bolder missionary than most members. I am amazed at the testimony this woman has and her willingness to share it. When I asked her why she shared it with them she said "Y'all have been spending your time sharing this new information with me, so I thought i would do the same thing. It wouldn't be right if I just kept it to myself!" I think that every member of The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints should see Ms. Renee as an example to follow. We have something so precious, so life changing and so motivating. It's not right it we just keep it for ourselves. I was reading in "Our Search for Happiness" by M. Russell Ballard, killer book by the way, and he was talking about how it's and LDS persons perspective that keeps us motivated. It is knowing that this isn't it, there is so much more to it than just this, work, school, play. And once this is realized the big things in this life start to look smaller and we realize what really matters like our families. My mission president made a statement this week at zone conference, he said "We have to sacrifice what we want NOW for what we want MOST." Very profound, it's that eternal perspective!
Yesterday was so good! Sometimes, well almost always proselyting Mondays arent very fun because your head keeps telling you its your day to relax but then your working. So it kinda plays with your head but yesterday we made a trip to Kentwood, LA and met a less active, named Kelsey. she reminds me of Morgan Sobotka, or in other words she is adorable ;) She is 20 and she has such a strong testimony. She is planning to come to our Branch pioneer day! We also met Quentera, she is a girl that received a Book of Mormon from a member when she was working in North Dakota. We were able to see her and she said she is very interested in learning more. We are really excited about them both. Only down side is its 30 miles to Kentwood one way. So we are saving on miles so we can go back soon!
Well I've gotta go, God is great y'all and He is here in the south! I love htis gospel and I love my mission.
